Parks & Recreation Plans to Create a NYC Water Trail—Volunteers Wanted

Before planes, trains and automobiles…it was boats that carried people from one place to another by way of rivers, lakes and oceans. New York City is surrounded by such bodies of water, yet its shorelines have been largely dominated by commerce and industry for centuries. One of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s highest priorities is to restore access to the City’s waterfronts and interpret the rich history of its shoreline.

"Throughout the city, parks along the shoreline are being built and renovated to reconnect the public with the water—Baretto Point Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Hudson River Park, Fort Totten Park and Fresh Kills Park to name just a few," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Among the amenities available at these parks, many have or plan to have canoe and kayak launches. To connect these sites and enhance the users’ experience and safety, I have asked our Queens Borough Commissioner, Dorothy Lewandowski—a water sports enthusiast and an accomplished kayaker—to spearhead the initiative to create a NYC Water Trail."

"As an avid kayaker, I am delighted that the opportunities for kayaking right in my own backyard are expanding," said Queens Borough Park Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski. "And I am thrilled to be working to create a comprehensive guide that will enable people to safely travel throughout the City via its waterways and to thoroughly enjoy their day at sea."

The NYC Water Trail will provide information on safe and legal access to the waters surrounding all five boroughs of New York City. The project will identify park launch sites, as well as connect those to non-park launch sites. The guide will also provide recreational, educational and scenic opportunities on each leg of the trail.

This spring and summer, Parks will be collecting information, surveying conditions, photographing, and writing narratives. There are currently 18 existing public canoe and kayak launch sites on parkland with an additional 11 sites in planning and nearly 20 identified as potential sites. Borough Commissioner Lewandowski plans to travel each leg, along with project volunteers, to document the trail. Once all of the information is gathered, work on the website development of the guide will begin—with hopes to launch in the spring of 2008.

Parks will be working with the Hudson River Watertrail Association, Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance and American Canoe Association. This project will rely on volunteers who understand and use the waters of New York City, as well as those who can provide information on the history, geology and points of interest along the trail. If you are interested in becoming involved in this project please contact Borough Commissioner Lewandowski’s office at 718-520-5905 or parks.watertrail@parks.nyc.gov. For more information on existing canoe and kayak launch sites in New York City parks, visit www.nyc.gov/parks or call 311.

Bowling:
Bowling is one of those activities everyone thinks they're good at.

It looks so easy on TV, and when you think about it, how hard can it be to knock down a few hapless blocks of wood with what amounts to a lethal weapon?

But when you finally get around to hitting the lanes for your nephew's birthday party, you remember that bowling is pretty dang tough. It can be embarrassing, really, although it usually makes for some good laughs.

But I digress. What we're really trying to decide here is whether bowling is a sport.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND MLB COMMISSIONER SELIG ANNOUNCE 2008 MLB ALL-STAR GAME WILL BE PLAYED IN HISTORIC YANKEE STADIUM IN ITS FINAL SEASON

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Commissioner of Major League Baseball Allan (Bud) H. Selig today announced that Yankee Stadium will host the 2008 Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game, the first Midsummer Classic played in New York City since 1977.  The 79th All-Star Game will serve as one of the highlights of the last season that the Yankees will play in the current Yankee Stadium, before the team moves to its new home in 2009.  Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding Daniel Doctoroff, President and CEO of NYC Big Events and Chief Marketing Officer Maureen Reidy, New York City Sports Commissioner Ken Podziba, New York Yankees General Partner Steve Swindal, and New York Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost also attended the announcement at City Hall.

“On behalf of 8.2 million New Yorkers, I thank Commissioner Selig and Major League Baseball for selecting a place that has been synonymous with success over its unrivaled 85-year history as the 2008 All-Star Game venue,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Considering the Yankees have gone to the World Series each time the All-Star Game has been played at The House That Ruth Built, I’m confident that baseball will continue to be played at Yankee Stadium well into the fall of 2008. The All-Star Game and its accompanying week will also be an economic boon to the City, generating an estimated $148 million in economic activity and attracting more than 175,000 visitors.”

“Major League Baseball is delighted that the 79th All-Star Game will be held at Yankee Stadium,” Commissioner Selig said. “Baseball fans from around the world will be able to celebrate our great game in one of baseball’s great cathedrals.  Yankee Stadium has been the site of numerous historical moments since its opening in 1923, and the 2008 All-Star Game will help provide a proper farewell to this splendid ballpark.”

“It is always a great honor for a team’s home stadium to serve as host for the All-Star Game, and the Yankees are proud and delighted to have been selected for the honor in 2008,” said George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the Yankees. “It will be one of many historic moments in the 2008 season as we say good-bye to a great facility and look forward to our new ballpark.  I am especially glad that so many of the sport’s great players and New York’s great baseball fans will have the opportunity to participate in what will be an especially significant All-Star Game.”

Prior to today’s announcement, the All-Star Game was held at Yankee Stadium three times (1977, 1960, and1939). The Yankees went on to play in the World Series in each of those three years, taking home two World Championships. Other New York City sites that have hosted the All-Star Game include: The Polo Grounds (1942, 1934), Shea Stadium (1964) and Ebbets Field (1949).

“The 2008 All-Star Game is another example of how the Administration is growing our economy and supporting the booming tourism industry through aggressively courting big events,” said Deputy Mayor Doctoroff.

“It’s only fitting that the MLB would bring its All-Star Game to New York City, since both the event and the venue represent the best of the best,” said NYC Big Events CEO Reidy. “The All-Star Game and its huge fan base from across the country is just the kind of big event New York City is pursuing – events that showcase New York City to as many potential visitors as possible.  We look forward to working with MLB to create a week full of excitement for visiting baseball fans from around the globe.”

“Major League Baseball’s selection of Yankee Stadium as the site for the 79th All-Star Game could not be more appropriate,” said Commissioner Podziba.  “The 2008 Midsummer Classic will undoubtedly serve as a celebration of the many All-Stars who have played inside ‘The House That Ruth Built’ or donned pinstripes.  We expect that this event will capture the rich tradition of baseball in New York City, as it did in 1939 when Yankee Stadium hosted its first All-Star Game.”

In addition to the actual game, the City will host a week-long series of festivities, featuring events such as Fan Fest, the Futures Game and the always popular Home Run Derby.  Through various partnerships, NYC & Company will also be promoting the week throughout all five boroughs. The City’s Economic Development Corporation projects an overall estimated economic impact of $148.4 million, with 176,239 more visitors coming to the City as a result of the week.

MLB’s choice of Yankee Stadium comes after a lengthy selection process.  In 2006, NYC Big Events, a division of NYC & Company, began leading the negotiations to bring the All-Star Game back to the Big Apple for the first time in 31 years.  Every year the game is watched by tens of millions of baseball fans at home and abroad, and New York’s unique ability as the leading media market should increase awareness, exposure and ratings for the game.

About NYC & Company:
Mayor Bloomberg has combined the formerly separate entities of NYC Marketing, NYC Big Events and NYC & Company under one banner—while keeping the NYC & Company name—creating the world’s leading organization dedicated to building New York City’s economy and positive image through tourism, marketing, events and convention development. Primary among CEO George Fertitta’s many objectives is to achieve Mayor Bloomberg’s goal of attracting 50 million visitors to New York City by 2015. MLB, Yankees, city of New York unveil the official 2008 All-Star Game logo

new-york-city-sports-image-1001.gif

Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees and the City of New York today unveiled the official logo of the 79th Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which will be played on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008, during the final season at Yankee Stadium. Today's unveiling took place at an afternoon press conference at Yankee Stadium.

Those in attendance prior to New York's game against the Chicago White Sox to discuss 2008 All-Star Summer were the Mayor of New York, the Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg; MLB President & Chief Operating Officer Bob DuPuy; Yankee executives Hal Steinbrenner, Randy Levine and Lonn Trost; past Yankee All-Stars Yogi Berra and Ron Guidry; and veteran Yankee All-Stars Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui.

The official logo of the 2008 All-Star Game is traditional and simple in nature, symbolic of the Yankee franchise, and incorporates the club's signature pinstripes and the architectural element of the famed Yankee Stadium façade. The colors of the 2008 Midsummer Classic will reflect the club's navy and white.

"The All-Star Game is always special, but the opportunity to celebrate our national pastime during the final year of Yankee Stadium is extraordinary," DuPuy said. "All of the events surrounding 2008 All-Star Summer promise to give the fans of the metropolitan area a memorable baseball experience. We look forward to partnering with the Yankees and the City of New York in order to deliver an All-Star Game that will serve as an appropriate farewell to this great cathedral of our game."

"Major League Baseball hit a home run by selecting Yankee Stadium as the site of 2008 All-Star Game - and the City has plenty of reasons to cheer, as All-Star Week will pump nearly $150 million in economic activity into New York," said Mayor Bloomberg. "The All-Star Game's stylish logo that we unveil today captures the essence of baseball's most successful franchise and the House that Ruth Built, and it is the perfect complement to an event that will write another chapter in the rich tradition of baseball in New York City."

"The New York Yankees embrace this opportunity to showcase the splendor that is Yankee Stadium," said Trost, the Chief Operating Officer of the Yankees. "This stadium was built to hold prestigious events like the Midsummer Classic, and it is the goal of this organization to host an All-Star Game that will provide another memorable and enduring stitch in the fabric of baseball's rich history."

In addition, Walter Iooss, Jr. has been named the official artist of the 2008 All-Star Game. The New York-based Iooss will capture the essence of All-Star Summer in New York City and at Yankee Stadium through his pictorial essays. Iooss, whose shots have appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated more than 300 times, has covered baseball for decades, including the 61st home run hit by Roger Maris in 1961. A metropolitan area native, Iooss has collaborated on such pictorial-autobiographies as Cal On Cal with Cal Ripken, Jr., and Junior with Ken Griffey, Jr.

The 2008 All-Star Game will be the fourth All-Star Game ever held at Yankee Stadium since its 1923 opening, joining 1939, 1960 and 1977. This will be the eighth time that New York City has hosted the event
